Chapter 3
The Leper Bridge ~ continued from Chapter 3 | Two Spirits of Man
Nitzevet looked at the leper.
“Are you for Egypt?” she asked. Nitzevet brought David in front of her and put her hands on his shoulders.
The leader stood back.
“I beg you, let us pass.” He bowed his head lower as he was not used to speaking to others.
“You have nothing to fear and we do not fear you,” she began.
The nine other lepers stood waiting silently. They pulled their dark, camel hair robes around them and huddled together against the mountain air.
“Where have you come from?” Nitzevet continued.
The leper took his hood from his face.
Nitzevet’s hands remained gently on David’s shoulders.
The man’s face was eaten away; his ears and nose were ragged flesh. He brought out his bloody, rotten stump of a hand and motioned towards the others.
“We are from the Kush.” “Soba?” she asked.
“Yes.”
Nitzevet moved close to the leader and reached out to touch his wet and dirty robe. He shrank into the shadows. The rain beat the men and the bridge swayed wildly in the mountain winds.
“Go in peace,” she said as she moved to the side of the pass and allowed the small troop to move on across the gorge.
The lepers moved slowly up the pass towards the narrow, broken bridge.
